The Phoenix Companies, a wealth management corporation, commissioned this book to mark 150 years of growth and a transition to becoming publicly held. The project involved 60 oral history interviews and extensive archival research.

The result was multifold. The book inspired a history video, a monthly series of employee profiles in the company newsletter, and a live historical re-creation pageant staged at the company's annual conference and hosted by Hugh Downs.
